Shot List

In many music videos you will see there is a wide range of camera shots in every single scene, From close up shots to extreme close up shots then to Establishing shots. This is to show the audience what is either happening where the location is or to show emotion behind something.

For our music video we have watched alot of videos that match our genre of the chosen song in order to get the right shots for our music video. We have decided to use:

Establishing Shot - This establishing shot is usually used when setting the scene. It gives the audience a better understanding of where the location of the music video has been set. It also shows the relationship between the people and place. For our music video because we are shooting in alot of open area spaces this should portray to the audience an open feeling. When rays of the sun hit the camera it will create the season of summer which will connect to that feel good vibe we hope to produce.

Wide/Long Shot - Usually this shot is to show an actor/performer in a bigger space. This creates a a performance space for the performer/actor. In some scenes in our music video we need quite big spaces and this shot will be good to get all the action in these particular scenes. Mainly in the chorus aspects of the song. With our music video this shot is good to use because of all the action we wouldn't want to add in birds eye vies shots because it would make it to dramatic and over the top. Keeping the shots in a professional suttle tone will be great for the style and genre of our music video.

Medium Shot - The medium shot will be used mainly when the performer will be lip syncing and playing the guitar. It will create the atmosphere and drag the attention onto the star image (Goodwins theory) without having other distractions. As the focus at this point will be on the performers facial expressions and the guitar. This means the lyrics will project their ways to the audience and gain their emotion and understanding. The audience will also be able to see the setting which will help the performer interact and the audience will be able to connect with this.

Extreme close-up- We are using an extreme close up at the very being on the guitar's strings and picking situations with fingers on the guitar strings (very Boyce Avenue Style and Tyler Ward inspired) However this looks good when they are in focus and in extreme close up. This is to tell the audience about the genre of music and also the talents of the actor.

Close up- We will be using a close up on the star image to show the emotions of the song. We thought what would also look good is it sometimes blur the background so the full attention of the audience is focusing on the performer and they will be able to feel her emotions that are being mad

Low angle- The low angle is to create a different perspective from the audience and to put themselves in that situation. When the sun is shining in the open space this angle will really reflect the rays that are in the shot and give a summer vibe and creating that feel good, free spirited theme that we are trying to aim for.

Zooming- We have decided to have zooming in and out of shot as like a transition so it flows between different shots so it’s not just one after another. This will look better for when we edit as we have transition to work with. However some scenes will just have cuts because it will create a better flow.

Panning- We want to use panning when doing Lyrics and visuals and it works well with them and would make sense to use panning. It will be like taking the audience on a journey and so it not them just watching the star image just standing there. It will add more character to their personality.

Overall these are all the shots that we shall be using when filming the music video.

Story Board

Before we can even shoot our music video we had to come up with a story board in order to guide us along when we come to film. The story board is mainly cut down into different sections of the song. What I have tried to do is make it easy as possible without the audience getting confused throughout the video. I have decided to keep the consistency of some scenes. This way it can flow easy when we come to film and edit the song. As shown above you ca see that some of these scenarios are not different. This is because they are kind of similar.

Scene 1:
Shot : Extreme Close up on guitar, quick cuts on strings, neck and finger picking (Boyce Avenue & Tyler Ward inspired)
Lyrics: take me to that place again I wanna feel your breath all on my skin, The moon is creeping through my window pane... silver.

Scene 2:
Shot: Panning through the trees (make sure to catch sun rays) high angles, Slowly coming down to follow on performer, medium shot
Lyrics: It shines between the spaces in the trees and finds its way right back to me, its like a million states of ecstasy...silver.

Scene 3:
Shot: Establishing turned to middle shot on two performers center stage.
Lyrics: Oh, oh, oh, I've got a plan, come with me. Take my hand You are what I need tonight, I'm hypnotized  by silver lights

Scene 4:
Shot: Medium, slowly panning &zooming camera into a close up
Lyrics: oh, oh, oh don't question it, just close your eyes and pull me in. I know when something's going right, Oh i'm in love with silver lights.

Scene 5:
Shot: Long, zooming and panning into a medium. Low angle looking up towards the performer.
Lyrics: My shoes anticipate my steps, I'm  not sure where i'm going yet I spend a lifetime searching for silver

Scene 6:
Shot: Close up - Super close up on watch on (minute)
Lyrics: Its love and heartbreak all at once, its minutes, days weeks and months

Scene 7:
Shot Long/medium zooming in on certain aspects of the section
Lyrics: Oh, oh, oh I've got a plan. Come with my, take my hand You are what i need tonight, I'm hypnotized by silver lights. Oh, oh, oh, don't question it Just close your eyes and pull me in I know when something going right, oh i'm in love with silver lights.

Scene 8:
Shot: Close up, low angle looking up
Lyrics: Silver, Silver, Silver lights

Scene 9:
Shot: close up blurred background
Lyrics: Have got my hypontized tonight, I've been broken all my life but you're the one thing that feels right

Scene 10
Shot: Close up, low angle looking up
Lyrics: Silver, silver, silver lights have got me hypontized tonight I've been broken all my life but you're the one thing that feels right

Scene 11
Shot: Long/medium shot, Zooming in on certain parts in sections
Lyrics: Oh, oh, oh, I've got a plan come with me take my hand you are what I need tonight I'm hypontised by silver lights, Oh, oh, oh don't question it. Just close your eyes and pull me in I know when something's going right, oh i'm in love with silver lights.

Scene 12
Shot: close up on performers face - giggle for outro
Lyrics: Silver, Silver, Silver lights x4

When researching into music videos I've actually started to notice that the music video itself has about 5 - 6 maximum different scenes. This is so the audience doesn't get confused throughout the song and keep up to what the singer is actually lip syncing through their lyrics. This is something i wanted to try to do to keep it up with professional standard.

I have broken the song down into its:
  • Intro
  • Verses
  • Pre Chorus
  • Chorus
  • Bridge
  • Outro
All of these aspects create the blocking to a song. With music videos they follow a similar pattern. They tend to use the same scene for each parts... So for instance looking at our story board you can clear see we have chosen to use the field scene whenever there is a chorus. This is because its the most happiest part to the song and beaty part. In addition to this whenever the beat slow down we tend to have a guitar scene.. for instance the bridge sings "Silver, Silver, Silver Lights" - We get the bridge twice in the whole song which is why we have decided to have it with the acoustic guitar sitting down because it adds to the tension just before it reaches its last chorus and outro creating the climax.

We have tried to add in different scenes depending on the kind of lyrics and visuals we would like too see in those situations. For instance Erica Hall had the idea of singing with the acoustic at the beginning to create this chilled relax vibe then slowly getting up and then moving into the next scene ready for the verse. Which is where i had the idea of bringing in our influence and summer vibes of walking and skipping down the streets dancing on the pavement in a free spirited way. Then we both decided on the chorus as being fun and cheesy just having a classic girls day out laughing in the fields.

Our actual story-line is based on the relationship of 2 girls being best friends. It starts off with just 1 girl singing and the casually going to the field to meet her friend for a while and from then on it just gradually builds into this fun friendship with happiness. Their teens their having a laugh and fooling around and being their typical quirky self. We hope after we have filmed the video and come to editing we can get aspects of the footage slow down on those parts. Which will create the more dramatic impact on the video itself.

One video we have seen that can help us create this free spirited vibe our from a band called Cimorelli. They are a group of sisters that sing on You Tube. When we first heard this song myself and Erica didn't know how it would fit in with out kind of theme but after watching it a couple of times we can clearly see that this is the kind of video we need to watch in order to get the bond across to the audience and the freedom and carefree attitude.
Cimorelli - Believe it

Another video which is great to see the bond between the sisters would be "Made In America". When they hit the chorus is just cheesy and great to see them having fun and just being themselves. Which is exactly what we intend to do in our music video. Again the carefree attitude is something which makes this video have the feel good vibe too it. It makes you smile and want to join in with the fun which is exactly what myself and Erica Hall tend to do.

Cimorelli - Made In America

Overall I believe that our storyboard/story-line for our chosen song will be good. It's cheesy, it's fun. It seems like its going to be fun to shoot because we can just have fun on camera with the props we are using and the settings. The ideas that we both have our coming out creatively which is why I think our music video may turn out good and how we actually want it too. The ideas that we are having our original and imaginative and they just keep flowing which is why I am keeping a diary of notes that just keep coming so if we do plan to change anything on the way through I can quickly type and update a blog post.

Shooting Schedule Back Up Plan

To shoot our music video we obviously need a back up plan just in case things go wrong, For instance:
  • Performers: - Are ill on the day or injured therefore this would mean that we would need to have a backup date in case. Or overall they may be busy the day that we want to film. This is also the reason why myself and Erica Hall decided to use ourselves within our music video, We have the same free lessons and we are both free at the same time which makes it alot more easier for us.
  • Weather: - Erica Hall and myself relied on the weather alot throughout our planning stage for our music video. We planned on having the summer weather. If this doesn't happen on the day of a shoot then we would need to obviously wait until a better day wheres its more sunny.
  • Footage comes out wrong: - If we finish filming and we re watch our footage back and its not up to Erica or my satisfactory it would mean re filming again. This could be due to lighting arrangements or just in general wrong angles.
The back up plan for a music video is vital because alot of the time myself and Erica are wanting to create the good feeling vibes throughout our music video. This is done by the sunshine and the blue skies. If this doesn't portray within our music video then it wouldn't looks as effective as it could. This is bound to happen. Which means Erica Hall and myself are going to need to research into the weather changes in that exact location to make sure we get the right date and time and make sure that our shooting schedule is stuck too to keep it professional and efficient.

Erica Hall and myself decided that we wouldn't set an actual shooting date in the end because the weather could change so quickly throughout the day, We decided to just wait for the day to show sunshine throughout and select the time we were free.

Our overall plan for reshooting is basically to wait for the sun to come out and then go and shoot making sure that we have checked the weather every day that week just in case it changes suddenly. This meant keeping track of the BBC weather forecast.

RESHOOTING

Journal note 1 -

- We have decided to re-film our music video after watching the footage back due to the fact of it being to dull and grey in the background. The lighting wasn't as good as we thought mostly due to the reflection of the sun to the camera lens. Erica Hall and I have decided to re shoot our footage to a different date where it's more sunny.

Furthermore we found that the camera angles weren't as good as they could be for some of the lyrics we were saying and we had some better ideas that we could do to change this. Overall we have decided that we will be reshooting our music video as soon as possible.

Journal note 2 -
- Re-shooting  was professional and quick. The weather stayed out which is great because when watching the footage back it improved the feeling towards our video, They're more happier, bright, bold, quirky emotions then what we had before.

Shooting Schedule

This is the shooting schedule that Erica Hall and myself have come up with. This shooting schedule should be printed off and kept safe during the filming process of the shooting. This way we can make sure that myself and Erica stay on top of each scene and are professional and kept strict with time limits.
There are possible switch around which may come to this shooting schedule. For instance is the weather start to turn bad e.g. - thunderstorms then there will be a likable chance that shooting that day would have to be cancelled and switched to a different day. Furthermore if their are passing showers we need to think about the timing issues in re changing the shooting hours.
This shooting schedule is just a basic guide of the day when we are going to film. We have made a table with the date, scene, time, casting (when they are needed that day) and where about's the location will be (there is another high possible chance that the locations will be switched around depending on the weather again.

Location Scouting

In order to create the actual music video myself and my group partner had to actually narrow our ideas down to 1 single idea (This has been shown in a previous post). When we narrowed down the actually idea and we could see different scenarios we had to then come up with the different scenery and settings. This meant we had to find different locations to meet the right codes and conventions in our genre of music video style. Watching different music videos has actually helped influence some of our settings for instance researching into artist that link well with our genres such as "Lenka" and "Eliza Doolittle". These artist actually helped alot to create the basic setting to create the summer and feel good vibes that we wanted to go for. When watching both of these videos Erica Hall and myself actually noticed that they base alot of their videos outside which is great because its exactly what we wanted to do to create the summer, relaxed, chill out vibe.

For our location scouting myself and Erica Hall actually had a few ideas for instance after watching the music video Believe it by Cimorelli we were inspired to go to beaches and just spend the whole day filming at the beach, However we had to think about the possibilities of the actual video camera loosing its battery charge. So this meant we had to then change our ideas of location scouting. Cimorelli mainly influenced us through their mis en scene, being a group of girls just having fun. It's shown through there facial expressions and body language. At no point when watching this music video did i feel uncomfortable it felt really happy and couldn't stop smiling. This is something myself and Erica would love to portray in our music video. Their locations of being at a beach really did play well with the summer pop vibe. The colours too. The fact that it seems like its been a 1 day shooting process for this music video (as you can tell from the different lighting situations in the video) is something myself and Erica want to do when filming which is why we have decided we would like to go to a field instead of a beach. We want the field to have long grass that way we can run around in it lip sync and have the sun in the background creating the perfect back drop for a relaxed summer vibe.

We then decided to retrace our steps and look into the artist of Eliza Doolittle and Lenka to see what kind of videos they have come up with,  Also trying to match the codes and conventions within the music video too. I have found out that Lenka tends to sit in parks and is close near roads in her music video which gives off the ordinary every day life situations

This is something myself and Erica both noted down and decided to keep as one of our main options, I figuired if we could have a path way near a road and at least some trees it would seem alot more summery and give off the outdoors vibes which we both really liked. From the first moment we hear Lenka sing "I'm just a little bit caught in the middle" - We are shown long shots of Lenka and her surroundings. This is the kind of surroundings we would like to go for however the place we have chosen don't actually have a bench they have a Costessey sign stand which is something we could use to sit on and play the guitar.

Going back to our original influence all along Eliza Doolittle has really inspired us to create the bright aspects of using different scenarios such as brick walls and pathways. We feel like this is something that could help with the star image at certain points in the music video. Eliza Doolittles videos again are always giving off the bright happy vibes and her scenes and locations always help along with this. Again props and costumes also have something to do with this too which is why we have taken Eliza Doolittle as one of our main influence for our music video. In the music video "Big When I Was Little" we can see straight away from the first scene the kind of road and houses along the side.
We would like this in our music video however without the houses but with trees instead. - I believe that this will help with the nature because stereotypical when you think of flowers and nature you always think back to this kind of summer vibe. Which is exactly what we want. Another Video of Eliza Doolittle's that influenced the outdoors vibe and setting would be the song "RollerBlades" Again its alot of walking down streets and just being carefree and happy. Bike rides, balloons and parks. Its exactly the kind of thing that myself and Erica would love to go for.

The main influence towards our location scouting would be again from 2 girls that are YouTube artists, They have made a  music video called "A Girls Life". Their videos seem to have the perfect kind of locations for the style of our music video that can also match the codes and conventions within Goodwins theory.
When watching this music video we can see the group of girls are again int he outside area. This is obviously the basic location area of our music video outside in the air with the trees to create these different emotions when listing to the song it immedialty sounds like an outside song not and indoors one. Its one of those songs where you have to hold your head up walk along the road and smile too (Silver Lights - Drew tabor) It really fits the right location of being outside in the open air and as soon as certain instruments hit down you instantly get this summer, outdoors look.

This is one of the main reasons i have chosen this particular music video as the main focus point towards location scouting. We like the idea of Erica and Myself being in the long grass fields (like the video below) and walking past trees and singing on the pathways. Furthermore also these 2 girls have a great bond of friendship which is something myself and Erica hope to portray through out the music video too.

All together from these music videos I have taken key notes and fed-back to Erica about the things I like. She has also done the same. We have both agreed there are elements in the above videos that we like alot more then others (location wise). This is why we have chosen the following areas to shoot.

  • A Long winding road and pathway
  • A long grass field
  • Costessey post
Now it may seem like there only a couple of scene changes however once it comes down to filming and editing it will soon seem like alot. We didn't want to add to many places because jumping from different scenarios could become a little bit jumbled for the audience watching. Erica and myself have decided to take pictures of the locations we are going to be shooting at. We have taken into consideration the places we are filming and the risk assessments/health and safety procedures too. All of the places we have chosen we have tried to narrow down into the same area which makes it easy if we ever need go back to Erica Hall's house and recharge the video camera. We can easily make a full day of filming and be done if we keep it professional and in with time with the shooting schedule.

Our Locations

These are the main places we are going to be filming in. They create a good folk genre vibe with acoustic. Furthermore the mis en scene will hopefully bring out a lot more of the jazz style from the codes and conventions. Erica and myself are very happy with the choices of our location even though its the beginning of September it could almost be classed as late summer due to the colours of the fields. However i believe the yellow/green colour still adds bright colours and gives it the summer look. You can clearly see how the "Megan and Liz" music video has influenced our choices with the field and how Eliza Doolittle and Lenka have combined together to get the other locations. Which is great. Our whole video will be taken in the Costessey area which makes it local to the Norwich area hopefully if anyone sees the thumbnail and see the surroundings on You Tube or any other social network site they will click on it and see that its Costessey and that will gain a bigger and wider audience. I believe our choices in location are spot on with he influence and will help combine mis en scene, codes and conventions together to create the right video for the style of song. I can also see in  my mind the blocking for each part of the song in these scenes too.

Costume Choices

For our costume choices myself and Erica Hall decided to watch some of our favorite videos on YouTube that reminded us of "feel good" vibes and summer time situations. When researching into these music videos we decided to use Eliza Doolittle "Big When I Was Little" - music video and live performances and the band Cimorelli - "believe it" and "made in America". 3 of these music videos all relate to good times and summer feeling vibes which is what me and Erica would like to portray in our music video. When looking at the costume choices we can see lots of femininity at use with bright colors and dresses. There are a lot of floral patterns which could relate to the summer feeling and the girl target audience.

I decided I would use my skills of art to create an inspiration collage that myself and Erica can look at when we feel the need for inspiration towards the costume choice. The Collage helps because its different costumes we like and its about finding the different material and outfits and accessories and drawing them together to make the  best yet suitable costumes for our music video.

We have decided for our music video after researching into these videos we shall be using bright colored outfits mainly dresses and denim jackets. Accessories we have thought about would be flower headbands or cute bows to create the feminity of the younger audiences and the target Audience of young teenagers that like the fashion style. We have decided to use sunglasses and straw hats to create the folkish feeling with this. Eliza Doolittle wears these 60's style iconic sunglasses which is what me and Erica plan to do to create the jazz and folk style. Going back to the conventions of jazz it has to look quite stylish yet formal.. Which is why me and Erica have planned to use summer time dresses to get the feel good vibes yet it is still stylish and rather quirky too. Going back with the conventions of folk we have decided to use my black acoustic guitar which can be related to the "silver lights" song itself. Hearing the acoustic wit hint the song at the beginning and in the verses this will also relate to the folk aspects of of couture choices.

When looking into different music videos such as "Big When I was Little" you can see the different kind of style Eliza Doolittle has from other artist like Jessie J or Beyonce. This is because she has a different target audience. Artist like Jessie J and Beyonce have a wider audience that differs in age because of the style of their music. Whereas Eliza Doolittle has her own style and that shows in her costume choise in each of her music videos too.
I have print screened some different outfits Eliza Doolittle wheres in different songs of hers.
For instance this shot of Eliza her sunglasses are very retro old school which can represent that Eliza can be seen as an old school kind of artist. Where as if Beyonce of Jessie J wore sunglasses you would possibly be looking for something a little bit more mainstream.

Again you wouldn't expect to see these kind of hats worn either in a lot more popular music videos. This is because Eliza Doolittles music is somewhere along the lines of folk/jazz/acoustic/pop. To create her right style of music video she needs to wear the right costumes. Just like any other artist would depending on there genre of song and record label. Eliza Doolittle has this kind of funky fresh edge to her costumes which screams out that she is trying to attract the new younger generations because they could be seen as funky and fresh because their the new generation.

When we get to this scene of Eliza in the record shop she is actually wearing a short yellow dress which shows that her target audience may be opening to a wider audience then we thought. I would say from what shes wearing at least 15 - 19 year olds is her target audience. Her costume choice bring our different things such as the colour's. There bright which could represent the happiness that Eliza is feeling throughout the song and the boldness of her personality. Yellow can be shown as a rather vulnerable colour and it represents the childish behavior and innocence.

In her music video of "RollerBlades" we see that Eliza is wearing short and a white strap top which clings well to her figure showing her femininity. It's the colour white which again is a pure colour. It can relate to her purity. The while colour is also reflection off her skin giving her an almost angelic glow to her face which could suggest that she is seen as a role model to the younger target audience. Again White, its a stand out colour its bold and bright.
Because she is wearing shorts it immediate adds to the whole femininity of showing her legs. Also shorts are mainly worn in the summer/spring time which could relate back to the season that she is in.

when looking at the music video "Believe It" by Cimorelli you get a whole different vibe from the colour's of their clothes for instance we see alot of floral patterns which again relates tot he summer feel good vibe. In contrast to that you also get their location of a beach which immedialty makes you think summer time. The lighting in this video is something myself and Erica really like. which is why were going to try and get these different kind of sun rays in our video to create different blemish on the camera lens.  It looks effect because of the summer vibes. However with this kind of style video from Cimorelli it really does work.

Their costume choices our bright and over the top which makes them stand out against their surroundings. There's alot of pinks, greens, blues and yellows which all to me are bright summer colour's. This is something myself and Erica would need to take into concideraton when finding the right costumes. The more colours their tends to be in a costume the more feel good and happy you get about the music video.

With the picture of Lauren from Cimorelli with the glasses and head band and bubbles. It just shows that the props. location and costumes all play a part together in helping come up with the right emotions to portray across. Along with the help of the colours. This is something that myself and Erica really do need to look into when we come to finding our costumes. This is because of the kind of themes we would like to go for in our music video. Also we should be thinking about the accessorizes of hats, flowers, sunglasses ad jewelry and nail varnish. These are little tiny things that draw attention to the costume and performers making them stand out alot more. This is something myself and Erica need to sit down and discuss.

Lenka's is one of the many artist's that myself and Erica hall decided to research into for inspiration. Lenka's music video "The show". When you look at the outfit Lenka is wearing, It is pretty innocent and girlie. This reflects her personality through the whole music video. Her hair is up, however i feel with the sound of our song its quite a easy lsiting tune which means maybe we need to think about having our hair down to create this playful style thats quirky.

I find that our main inspiration for our costume choise would be from Eliza Doolittle and possibly the cimorelli girl band. Even though Lenka would be a good choice I don't think her fashion sense would fit into our music video as well. Lenka's voice is rather girlie and her whole music video is rather cheesy and sweet. Her outfit actually goes well with her music and song. Whereas our song is more out going and bold with a rather big personality.

I think Erica Hall and myself need to think about wearing bold colours that stand out against our locations we have picked because then the star image is bold and it represents the bold vibrant good feeling that we are going for in our music video. Overall our style and costume choices for our music video will be quirky yet fashionable however it will always target at the target audience we have aimed our music video at. For instance bright colors, flowers, cheesy sunglasses - possibly younger teenager girls.

Song Choice

To make our music video we needed to find the perfect song which fitted the biref given and the target audience. Finding the perfect song for our music video was actually very hard too do. Sometimes you would find a song and it would of been a signed singer, For our song chocie it had to be something that we wouldnt be bored with, what we think an audience would like to here and obviously and unsigned singer.

Finding the right song took a lot of our time up, we were constaly sending messages back and forth to different local acts and bands and getting no reply. We stumbled upon a couple of unsigned singers but we just didn't feel their song suited our likings.

We searche don YouTube alot and then suddenly we stumbled across a youtube channel called "Drew Tabor" she is a young girl who uploads alot of acoustic covers, we found a link in the video descriptions to her youtube channel to her new EP. I then took down this information and searched her name in google and nothing suggested that she was signed which means that she was an unsigned singer on youtube with one great song. I played the song to my fellow group member Erica Hall, and we could both see different scenarios in our head. So we decided to email Drew on facebook also on Youtube, We got an instant reply which gave us our first choice in song. The interesting thing is that we didn't think we would get a reply for Drew as she has aload of views on her videos which we thought would be impossible to get in contact with us. When Drew replied back it was a shock.

Our second choice was from a girl in a band called Sunday Lane. She's rather chilled out and when we found her sond we also pictured the different scenarios running through our heads. We emailed Sunday Lane asking for there permisson and happily she allowed us.

It took us at least 1 day to Narrow down to the final song, The final song that we decided to go with is Drew Tabor "Silver Lights". The reason for this is because she is a rather well known person on You Tube and has a big fan base which allows us to get more views and a wider audience on the music video to be interested enough ion watching it. Furhtermore we felt that her tone and her style of music fitted the target audience all together. We saw positivity and good vibes from this song choice and its something that we hope to apply to our music video. I'm very happy with the song choice for our music video and so is Erica Hall. Were going to carry on researching and planning into the music video and come up with a lot more ideas.

Music Video Planning Part 2

Below I have written out the lyrics to "Silver Lights" by Drew Tabor which is mine and Erica Halls chosen song for our music video. The reason I have decided to do this is because I wanted to annotate the lyrics with different ideas for our music video. When annotating these lyrics I tried to think of different conventions to music videos but mainly focused on "lyrics and visuals".

I had ideas such as when Drew sings the lyrics of "Oh Oh Oh" myself and Erica could emphasises this with big white cards and black lettering of "Oh Oh Oh" each time it's sung that way it's a simple yet quirky/bold way of showing the lyrics and matching them with the visuals on screen for the audience benefits.

This was a good idea because throughout the song we had a lot more ideas come to mind with different camera angles which is shown in the picture below. This has defiantly helped myself think of different scenarios and outcomes to the music video.

Music Video Planning

Erica Hall and myself have planned our music video through suggesting different ideas that pop into our head and then writing a spider diagram. We grouped certain parts together because we both felt like this would be more organised for myself and Erica too look at whenever we needed different ideas. This planning is actually helping us a lot too come up with different ideas such as costume choices which has been posted previously, setting locations and coming up with the main outline of our storyline for the music video.

We really hope to challenge some of the conventions in music videos and we hope that our planning will help guide us towards this direction over the following weeks.

So far as you can see from this spider diagram Erica and myself have come up with lots of ideas and are going into this project with an open mind and trying to be as creative as possible to match the target audience we are aiming our video at. We've tried to broaden our ideas and imagination with this which will hopefully lead to a suitable music video.

Below is a picture of the spider diagram with mine and Erica's ideas.

Focus Group

This video is a video that shows some of the interview questions we have asked different ages of the target audience. The Questionnaire Analysis actually helped us narrow down to what age range we should be aiming at and asking the questions too. We also figured that because of the style we want to aim more of our video towards the target audience of teenage girls. However boys would be welcome to watch it but we feel that girls would be alot more significant in this case. This video was filmed using iPads and edited on iPads using the software iMovie. We have been given permission from Drew Tabor (which is the artist who song is playing in the background when the group discuss the song in further detail).

Firstly we decided to interview at least 2 people from the group that way we can get different opinions from the questions we have asked then the second part of this interview we decided to go with showing these girls the song and getting their reaction from it. Having them sit around the table with the lyrics and the music playing allowed the girls to discuss as a group what kind of things they disliked and liked about the song itself. For instance we got alot of positive feedback from 3 of the girls and then 1 negative comment from Zoe Jolly who has said that it isn't something she would listen too because she mainly listens to 60's music and rock.  However knowing that the percentage of the girls said they liked the song and that they would listen to it gave us positive feedback knowing we are aiming it at the right age and gender.
Furthermore when we ask questions about what kind of emotions they feel when listing to the song we can clearly see that its alot of positive attitudes and nothing negative or depressing, Kim Erum described the song as bouncy and relating it to different artist such a Collbie Calliat. In addition to this in the interview section we got the response that the music reminded the girls of artists such as "Eliza Doolittle" "Lenka and "YouTube artists". This is very good because we didn't tell them the song name or artist which means that they were able to point out that this girl singing is actual fact a You Tube artists. However something important that i have picked up from this would be that they related the song to sounding similar to "Eliza Doolittle" and "Lenka". This is fantastic because this is the exact same reaction Erica Hall and myself had towards the song choice. We have also been researching into these artist for the researching and planning process. This shows that myself and Erica Hall are on the right track in researching these artist because its something that these teenage girls know so matching up the similairtes between each song and artist will be good to combine together in our music video for the audience liking.

When planning for our music video. We kept researching into what this target audience had said and what things they would want to see.. For instance "summer vibes and firends having fun and laughing" - Hearing this comment from our focus group was great because it allowed us to develop this in the planning and research stage. This focus group video was viewed alot when choosing different options and opinions.

This focus group will help towards the palnning process of our music video, The comments that the girls gave will help myself and Erica create the exact kind of music video/ style based video they were looking for. I think that listing to the feedback and the opinons that these guys gave towards the song and mentioning the artisit "Eliza Doolittle" will help us create a artist which we can get inspiration from.

Overall Erica and myself need to taker into consideration what these girls have said and how they feel about the music video, how we as the makers of the music video can make it more appealing to audiences that don't like to listen too the song. Furthermore the suggestions of different artists would be helpful for research based in codes and conventions. This is something worth looking into to match the girls opinions for the music video.

Questionnaire

This is the questionnaire we shall be using in order to gather and collect information on audience theory/research. After finding our research I shall be tallying up the totals and analyzing what the audience would like to see in music videos and how much they already know about music videos. This will help later on during the film making process of the music video and planning process to help come up with ideas that would be suitable for our target audiences.

Case Study 3 Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up

Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up

Avril Lavigne's new single "Heres To Never Growing Up" shows alot of Goodwin's theory at use. From this pop music video we can see part of lyrics and visuals, star image at use as well as the performance and  narrative point of view in this music video.

When watching this music video i tried to take into account what the lyrics were saying and how the music video helps show this. Obviously in the music industry there's alot of talk about artists selling out due to record label's. However in this music video of "Heres To Never Growing Up" we can see that Avril is showing and expressing her own individuality through the use of lip syncing towards the camera in close up shots and medium/middle camera angles.

"Heres To Never Growing Up" basically states what the song is actually about, however looking and comparing this video to other Avril Lavigne videos we can see that she has gone back to her old videos and inputted them into this music video. For instance in Avril Lavignes music video of "Complicated" We see Avril wearing black baggy jeans and a white shirt riding a skate board. In this music video of "Here's To Never Growing Up" we see Avril taking the exact same camera angles and body actions by wearing the same outfit and using the same routine she did on her skate board. This is a sign of lyrics and visuals. On this part of the music video we are listening to the lyrics of " Singing here's to never growing up, We'll be running down the streets singing kiss my A** i'm like yeah whatever i'm still living like that" This suggest that Avil is protesting to her fans saying that shes now going to grow up and become something she doent want to to be instead shes going to stay "Old School" like her older music videos and keep doing what she likes doing in a fun enjoyable way for her fans.

The similarities
Furthermore we see alot more scenarios in this music video to the lyrics and visuals. We hear the lyrics or "With the boombox blaring as were falling in love" when we are given these lyrics Avril is in the camera angle holding a boombox up above her head. This has been done to show and emphasis towards the audience what the lyrics are saying and how Avril takes this on board. This is to show the audience the lyrics through the use of visuals to make it more understandable for the audience to understand what is going on. In this music video lyrics and visuals are used alot to emphasis towards the audience.

Lyrics and Visuals
Furthermore, throughout this video we see lyrics and visuals at use however they are well hidden. In this music video we see the imprint of the lyrics on the walls used by spray paint or on chalk boards in the background of each scene which emphasis towards the lyrics again making it ovbious for the audience to understand what avril is lip syncing about. like this picture of the guy sliding down the hallway with the words "Never Growing Up". This is what we hear when we see this shot.

Never Growing Up
Another point we can link in with Goodwin's theory for music videos would be star image. With this music video star image has been used alot. This means we expect to see Avril in every shot of the camera or music video weather that's in close up or extreme close ups, long or middle shots. We as an audience expect to see this because its Avrils voice that we tend to here. When using star image its the demands of a record label to have the lead singer in every single shot. "Here's To Never Growing Up" actually shows this quite often. The fan base would expect to see Avril in the music video because its her that they want to see more than anything else. Which is why we have alot of these close up shots of Avril lip syncing towards the camera. When watching this music video Avril had the most camera time compared to any of the band or extras within the video. Literally each frame is shown for a good 3 seconds or longer then cuts to a different close up of Avril lip syncing towards the camera in close ups.

Star Image
The last Andrew Goodwin point i found in this music video would be the performance and narrative structure to this music video. We see two scenarios at this point one where Avril is playing the High School band for a prom.. At first the prom looks completely dead and not enjoyable then we hear the beats in the song and the prom suddenly comes alive with Avril performing to the class. Then the other where she is generally lip syncing towards the camera. We can also tell that this class is at a prom due to the mis en scene of the setting and costumes that these people are wearing. Smart formal dress and balloons and tables it's the typical American High School prom that you would see in movies almost like from the film "American Pie"

e.g. - In this music video we see typical red cups, formal wear, balloons, streamers and fancy outfits suggesting the idea of a formal dance. When we get the shot of teenagers running down the corridor it suggest there surroundings are at a high school. Which emphasis to the "Here's to never growing up"

mis en scene
Mis en scene
Within this video there is a narrative and a performance structure to the music video. The performance structure within this music video is usually to show that Avril and her band can play the music. The performance side within bands normal shows alot of close ups on guitars and drums to show that the bands music is important to them its something which identify s them. Usual music videos like this especial Avril's are always cut into performance and narrative showing a convert form or a fun story line between it. Like this video does. The way the performance structure has been layed out is in the style of a live band. Which is what avril and her band are pretending to be at the moment a high school prom band. The way the band is positioned sometimes tells you weather its going to be a performance based video in this case we see a performance based strucutre but also a narrative too.
performance based
Overall in this music video of "Heres To Never Growing Up" we see alot of star image at use, performance and narrative structure with the use of lyrics and visuals. We also see to help emphasis what music video this is the use of mis en scene to help create the surroundings and settings to this music video and title of the song. Mis en scene and Andrew Goodwins theory is played together to create the right music video for this song. The colors the setting the lyrics and visuals have all combined together to help portray the message that Avril wants to send out to her fans watching which is to "Never Grow Up".
